But somewhere between childhood and adulthood, most of us stopped listening to those stories. The curious, hands-on investigation that defines every toddler's encounter with the world — running fingers along walls, clutching at grass, pressing palms to bark — gets slowly conditioned away. By the time we're adults, we reach into the unknown with hesitation rather than wonder.
This was vividly illustrated at the 1967 Montreal Expo, where an exhibit designed to awaken visitors' five senses produced a telling moment of collective awkwardness. People willingly sniffed mystery odors, strained to hear hidden sounds, and adventurously tasted the unknown — but stood frozen before a series of holes designed to be explored by touch alone. What were they afraid of? Perhaps it's the legacy of a culture that has long treated tactile engagement — especially sensual, exploratory touch — as suspect, indulgent, or somehow improper.
The irony is that just as we've grown more touch-averse, the world has grown more touchable-looking than ever. Plastics convincingly mimic the grain of wood. Printed wallpaper sells the illusion of exposed brick. A photograph of velvet makes your fingertips anticipate softness that simply isn't there. We have become masters of textural theater — constructing surfaces that promise a sensory richness they cannot deliver. Our experience of texture has migrated almost entirely from the fingertip to the eye.
In nature, this kind of visual trickery is a matter of survival — the camouflage of predator and prey, the mimicry of the harmless imitating the deadly. In human culture, the same mechanisms play out, though the stakes feel less obvious. When we trade tactile reality for visual simulation, we don't just lose a sense. We lose a mode of knowing — one that is slower, more intimate, and perhaps more honest than sight alone.
